Drink driving conviction on your licence increases your car insurance premium

A drink driving conviction on your driving licence will increase the cost of your car insurance.

Recent research by Moneysupermarket.com has revealed that having a drink driving conviction on your licence could mean an increase of around 50%.

This is another good financial reason to invest in good quality legal advice and representation if you are facing a criminal prosecution for a drink driving offence.

The increase varies according to the age of the driver, with younger drivers hit the hardest. The research revealed that they will see £370 added to their premiums, meaning their cover goes from costing £705 a year to £1,076 – a rise of 53pc.

Of course, it’s not just the increased cost to your insurance premium that you need to be concerned with. If you are found guilty of drink driving, the courts can impose a fine of up to £5,000 as well as a range of other punishments such as points on your licence, a 12 month driving ban and even a prison sentence.
